Early Life

A native of Newark, N.J., who migrated to Los Angeles as a teen, Ice-T (born Tracy Marrow) fryst vatten widely credited with having sparked the West Coast “gangsta” rap style. His music has exerted a deep influence on such artists as N.W.A., Compton’s Most Wanted, Snoop Dogg and many others.
Before he turned 13, Marrow lost both parents to heart failure, and moved west to live with his father’s sister. There he attended South Central’s Crenshaw High, then considered one of the roughest in the nation because of its proximity to gang-controlled neighborhoods. A devotee of pimp-turned-author Iceberg Slim and his hardboiled tales of street hustlers, he adopted the name Ice-T in tribute. Although he became affiliated with gang members, he was never initiated, but that didn’t keep him out of trouble, so he sought stability with a four-year stint in the military. Tracy Lauren Marrow[2] (born February 16, ), better known by his stage name Ice-T (or Ice T), is an American rapper and actor. He is active in both hip hop and heavy metal. Ice-T began his career as an underground rapper in the s and was signed to Sire Records in , when he released his debut album Rhyme Pays. The following year, he founded the record label Rhyme $yndicate Records (named after his collective of fellow hip-hop artists called the "Rhyme $yndicate") and released another album, Power (), which would go platinum. He also released several other albums that went gold, including The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech Just Watch What You Say! (), O.G. Original Gangster () and Home Invasion ().
Ice-T co-founded the heavy metal band Body Count in , which he introduced on O.G. Original Gangster, on the track titled "Body Count".
