Edouard Carpentier was often said to be the nephew of former boxing great, Georges
Carpentier. From Roannes, France, he stood five foot nine inches and weighed 230
pounds. Carpentier was a former multiple-time World Champion and worldwide fan
favorite. The man known as the “Flying Frenchman” was trained by the legendary Henri
DeGlane and manged by Bob Langevin upon his arrival to the United States. He made his
rounds through St. Louis and worked for promoter Sam Muchnick.
Carpentier wrestled the tough Killer Kowalski on February 1, 1957 before 4,556 and
pinned his opponent in 25:45. The victory earned him an NWA World Title Match against
Lou Thesz at the Kiel Auditorium on February 22nd. More then six-thousand, five hundred
fans attended the card to see if Carpentier could walk away with the belt. He was counted

During the “Golden Age” of professional wrestling immediately following World War II, there were many famous wrestling heroes and villains that were known all across the country, due primarily to the fact that wrestling was an enormous part of the early development of television. At a time when a broadcast day for the networks lasted less than 12 hours, there was still hour after hour of professional wrestling featured on the new entertainment medium. Pro wrestling was experiencing a huge boom in popularity and certain names stuck out in the minds of wrestling fans and the public at large. “Killer” Kowalski, the hulking Polish monster of the föda, was unquestionably one of the most famous of them all.
