Waldemar Matuška (Czech pronunciation:[ˈvaldɛmarˈmatuʃka]; July 2, – May 30, ) was a Czechoslovak singer who became popular in his homeland during the s and s. In , he immigrated to the United States.
Early career
[edit]Waldemar Matuška was born in Košice, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), and spent his whole childhood in Prague. His mother was a singer in the Vienna and Košice operetta theatres. He trained at a glassmaking school and worked in glassworks Poděbrady as a glassmaker. Waldemar Matuška (July 2, - May 30, ) was a Czech singer who became popular in the s and s. In , he emigrated to the United States. Since the Velvet Revolution he has lived in Saint Petersburg, Florida.
Waldemar Matuška was born in Košice, Czechoslovakia, and spent his whole childhood in Prague. His mother was a singer in the Vienna operetta theatres. He worked as a glassmaker and performed on various musical instruments with many different bands. In he recorded his first song Suvenýr (Souvenir). Later he became an actor in the theatre Semafor. On the scen he performed with Karel Štědrý, Jiří Suchý and, starting in , with Eva Pilarová. He won the Zlatý Slavík (Golden Nightingale) music poll twice, in and , and placed second several times.
As his popularity grew he started acting in movies and writing songs for movies. Waldemar and Eva Pilarová left Semafor and joined the ensemble of the theatre Rokoko. But Pilarová soon returned to Semafor, and Matuška began singing with Helena V

Życie
[edytuj | edytuj kod]Urodził się w Koszycach na Słowacji, lecz całe dzieciństwo spędził w Pradze. Jego matka była śpiewaczką operową. W nagrał swój pierwszy utwór Suvenýr. Zdobył dużą popularność, wprowadzając na estrady Czechosłowacji muzykę country. Był aktorem w teatrze Semafor i teatrze Rokoko. Dwukrotnie (w i ) zdobył pierwsze miejsce w plebiscycie Złoty Słowik.
Emigracja
[edytuj | edytuj kod]W ożenił się z piosenkarką Olgą Blechovą. W opuścił Czechosłowację i wyjechał do Saint Petersburga na Florydzie. Po wyjeździe władze komunistyczne zakazały emisji jego piosenek. Z czołówki serialu telewizyjnego Chalupáři (Pod jednym dachem) usunięto jego piosenkę Když máš v chalupě orchestrion, pozostawiając jedynie melodię.
