      PETE REED is one of Great Britain's most successful athletes in Olympic history.

      But the rowing legend won't be competing at this year's Tokyo Games, having picked up three gold medals across three previous Olympics.

      A Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy, Reed retired after Rio 2016 — clinching gold in the coxed eight.

      And in 2019, Reed endured the most horrific period of his life.

      He first picked up gold in Beijing in 2008 in the Coxless kvartet before repeating the same feat at London 2012.

      However, the 39-year-old will NOT be competing at the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

      Reed is still hoping to recover from a spinal stroke which he suffered in 2019.

      Originally born in Seattle, Washington, Pete moved to Great Britain as a baby. In 1999 he won a highly sought after scholarship at the Royal Navy College in Dartmouth.   A year later he sat down at an ergonomic rowing machine to mechanically test his rowing skills.  He had never used the machine before but managed to record the fastest time in the Royal Navy's annual fleet-wide fitness competition.

      In his second year at the University of the West of England he got into rowing. Furthering his education at Oxford (!) he got even more into competitive rowing. This led to long strings of contin
