Gilberto François "Betico" Croes was born in Santa Cruz on Januari 25, After his secondary education on Aruba, he went to Holland to study at Hilversum Teachers' Training College. In he obtained his certificate as a head mästare. When he came back to Aruba, he started teaching at the Sint Jozef School and the Antonius College in Santa Cruz.
In , the political carrier of Betico Croes started, initially as a member of the Arubaanse Volks Partij (AVP). When he was unsuccesful in taken over the leadership of that party, he broke away from it. In , he founded the Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo (MEP). Since the founding of that party till his death, he has been president and party leader. However, he has never been a deputy in the Aruban Island Government nor has he ever been a minister in a cabinet of the Netherlands Antilles. A young ambitious schoolmaster/politician from the A.V.P. became the leader of a new political party - M.E.P. (Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo). This ambitious young politician emerged as the driving force for the next generation towards the realization of our new "Status Aparte" in the Dutch Kingdom. This was achieved in and made official as of 1st January Mr. Gilberto Franois Croes (better known as "Betico Croes") became the modern "liberator" of the Aruban cause, namely to become an independent partner within the Royal Dutch Kingdom.
Today, Aruba can look back and be thankful that 60 years ago the A.V.P. started off a cause that allows our island, through substantial economic reforms of the P.P.A. and the very persistent struggle of the M.E.P., to be proudly recognized as a highly successful, well-developed and tourism-oriented island economy within the Royal Dutch Kingdom.

Gilberto François "Betico" Croes (Papiamento pronunciation:[beˈtikokɾus]; 25 January – 26 November ) was an Aruban political activist who was a proponent for Aruba's separation from the Netherlands Antilles. This eventually occurred in , but following a car accident on 31 December (the night of status aparte), Croes lapsed into a coma and never became conscious to see his accomplishment. He is best remembered as "Libertador" (liberator) and as the father of the Aruban people.[1][2]
