The latter half of the twentieth century witnessed a diversification of ideas surrounding documentary photography, as notions of objectivity were debated and the boundaries between 'documentary' and 'art' became increasingly blurred. The traditional ambition to producera socially concerned images shifted towards a preoccupation with the subjectivity and anställda vision of the photographer. Many photographers sought to interpret the human experience rather than record it; the publication of Robert Frank's The Americans () inspired a new generation of street photographers including Joel Meyerowitz and Garry Winogrand. Tony Ray-Jones (7 June 13 March ) was an influential British post-war photographer who is best remembered for his light-hearted, quirky images of the English social landscape. The documentation of his fellow countrymen engaged in various leisure activities embodied a uniquely distinctive vision; quite a departure from the objective style of the s war photographer. Ray-Jones' subjective and artistic approach to photography subsequently influenced a new generation of independent photographers emerging in s Britain including Martin Parr, Daniel Meadows, Chris Steele-Perkins, and Simon Roberts.
Ray-Jones was born in Wells, Somerset to a physiotherapist mother and the British artist Raymond Ray-Jones (whose etchings are included in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum). At the age of eight, Ray-Jones lost his father, forcing the family to rely on financial support from the Artist's Orphan Fund. Life
[edit]Born Holroyd Anthony Ray-Jones in Wells, Somerset, he was the youngest son of Raymond Ray-Jones (–), a painter and etcher who died when Tony was only eight months old,[2] and Effie Irene Pearce, who would work as a physiotherapist. After his father's death, Tony's mother took the family to Tonbridge in Kent, to Little Baddow (near Chelmsford, Essex
