Baron George Hoyningen-Huene (September 4, – September 12, ) was a fashion photographer of the s and s. He was born in the Russian Empire to Baltic German and American parents and spent his working life in France, England and the United States.

[edit]Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia on September 4, , Hoyningen-Huene was the only son of Baron Barthold Theodor Hermann (Theodorevitch) von Hoyningen-Huene (), a Baltic nobleman, military officer and lord of Navesti manor (near Võhma), and his wife, Emily Anne "Nan" Lothrop (), a daughter of George Van Ness Lothrop, an American minister to Russia. (The couple was married in Detroit, Michigan, in ) He had two sisters. Helen (died ) became a fashion designer in France and the United States, using the name Helen de Huene. Elizabeth (), also known as Betty, also became a fashion designer (using the name Mme. Yteb in the s and s).[1]

George Hoyningen-Huene is acknowledged as an iconic pioneer in the genre of fashion photography. His elegant pared-down style has had a dramatic impact on photographers around the world and his work continues to have relevance today, as an artist who created some of the most striking photographic portraits and compositions of the twentieth century.
He was one of the first to capture the style of the haute couture fashion houses of Paris, including Chanel, Balenciaga and the jeweler Cartier. He quickly rose to the position of Chief Photographer at Condé Nast’s French Vogue. His keen eye for elegance, sophistication, and the ease with which he moved in aristocratic circles, introduced him to some of the most beautiful women of the day, many of whom would become his models. These included the Swedish dancer, Lisa Fonssagrives, the world’s first supermodel, who later married the American photographer Irving Penn.
