    Mahadevi Varma was a renowned Indian poet, social worker, and freedom fighter. She was born on March 26, , in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. She dedicated her life to the education and development of women. Varma is considered one of the foundational poets of the Chhayavad movement in Hindi literature. She is also a prominent figure in Hindi Kavi Sammelans.

    Early Life and Education

    Born in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, to a Hindu Brahmin family, Mahadevi Varma was the daughter of Govind Prasad Varma, a college lecturer, and Hem Rani Devi. Her mother was a spiritual, compassionate woman who instilled in young Mahadevi a love for music and spirituality, while her father was an erudite scholar with a zest for life. Mahadevi's close friends included prominent figures in Hindi literature, such as Sumitranandan Pant and Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, with whom she shared a bond of over 40 years.

      Mahadevi Verma’s Mera Parivaar, contrary to what its title may lead one to believe, is not about the poet’s human family but about the animals that formed her ‘family’. These are brief essays, each chronicling an animal that became part of her household for some time: whether the fourteen years or so of a dog’s lifetime, or the relatively short span of two years that a squirrel lives. A peacock named Neelkanth, a squirrel named Gillu. A rabbit, a mongoose, a pony, a deer, a dog: these are some of the creatures that Verma writes about in this slim memoir.

      Each essay covers the animal’s life, from how it came into Mahadevi Verma’s household, and up to its death—and in between, about the animal’s naturlig eller utan tillsats , its interactions with Ms Verma and the others in her household (and her school, which seems to have been contiguous with her household) as well as with the other animals that happened to be in residence at the time.
